![]() I once worked on a team that complained ad infinitum that customer information required a query that drew from two different tables. This constraint explains the loathsome characteristics of this code, and it also prevents us from doing our own genius solution. It allows us to assume that the prior developers just sucked at their jobs-which is uncharitable, but fine, until we realize that there was actually a constraint we didn’t know about. ![]() And we can find that terminology by dissecting what we mean when we say “tech debt.” Tech debt is more than just bad codeĮquating tech debt to bad code allows us to fall into traps. We, the engineers, have to examine our terminology. When businesspeople don’t want to grant a “tech debt week” because they saw with their own eyeballs that the last one improved the team’s capacity zero percent, how can we expect them to grant us another one with alacrity? They remember the last time they granted those weeks: within a month the team was underwater again. It sounds to the business like the engineers are asking for three weeks free from the obligation to release any features. Each conversant assumes they know what we’re all talking about, but their individual pictures differ quite a bit. Here’s the effect: the minute we trot out the term “tech debt,” everyone is upset but no one is listening. Engineers? Their answers vary the most, but often they’ve got something to say about “bad code.” We’ll return to why “tech debt equals bad code” is such a scourge, but first we have to address the effect of a bunch of different people defining the same term differently in the first place. Product folks lament how it means they lose three weeks and get no features out of the deal. Designers say it means the design can’t look the way they planned it. So they slap the term onto whatever happens to bother or frighten them. How many different answers do you get? Three? Four? Seven?Įverybody associates the term with a feeling-frustration, usually-but they don’t have a precise idea of where that feeling comes from. ![]() How? We try to get businesspeople, designers, product managers, and engineers onto the same page by using the phrase “tech debt.” But that phrase puts us on completely different pages.Īsk someone in tech if they’ve heard of tech debt, and they’re likely to respond with a knowing sigh. We have no idea how to even get the business to consider that.ĭoes this sound familiar? It’s a disheartening conversation.īut we often predispose ourselves to this situation. ![]() Every feature release will feel like this until we get a few weeks to dig ourselves out of tech debt. A third needed to spelunk a long-abandoned repository to initiate the database changes. Another got stuck reorganizing the feature flags. One developer got caught in a framework update. The site was laid out into a grid system for a detailed accounting of the wreckage. The mountaineers returned to the crash site where they erected polar tents and left caches of food and equipment for the parties.Ī helicopter pad was established and the longer task of recovering bodies and personal belongings was begun. Recovery and investigation parties were taken to the site in a Royal New Zealand Air Force C-130. They confirmed that all passengers and crew had been killed in the impact. The following morning, three mountaineers were lowered onto the Mount Erebus slope from a US Navy UH-1N helicopter. The weather was too poor for a landing but another helicopter circled the wreckage to confirm the Air New Zealand logo on the tail and that there was no sign of survivors. Finally at midnight, a US Navy Lockheed LC-130 Hercules spotted the wreckage on Mount Erebus. The search and rescue teams were initially searching the assumed flight path for hours. The flight crew reported at 6,000 feet and reported that they were still visual and descending to 2,000 feet. As a result of being on a different route, the aircraft never appeared on the controller’s radar. No one had informed the flight crew of the change and ATC were not aware. However, the flight plan had been changed before the flight to fix a mistake in the earlier route. The crew replied that they were clear of cloud and happy to proceed visually to McMurdo Station. ![]() The controller asked if they still needed the radar-controlled let-down below 10,000 feet through the cloud. The crew reported at 13,000 feet and at 10,000 feet. The controller approved this and asked the flight crew to keep Mac Centre advised of their altitude. The crew reported in at 43 miles from the station and asked for approval to descend further, confirming that they had clear visibility. These sight-seeing flights regularly descended below the minimum safe altitude of 16,000 feet so that the passengers could gain a better view and take photographs.Īir Traffic Control at McMurdo Station (Mac Centre) was aware of this and the controller advised the flight that once the flight was within radar range, about 40 miles (65 km) from the station, the flight could descend safely down to 1,500 feet using the radar controlled let-down service. The flight descended over McMurdo Sound for a view of Mount Erebus and McMurdo Station. Neither of the pilots had ever flown to Antartica before and the flight engineer had only been there once. The flight was due to arrive over Antarctica shortly after noon NZST. The passengers were offered a champagne breakfast and three films about the Antarctic as they made their way south. The flight included an experienced Antarctic guide to explain the sights over the public address system. Today, we might rephrase the meaning of redaction to mean “take back” information. Redactio can be traced to the Late Latin redigere, which meant “bring back.” Redaction comes from the French rédaction that came from the Latin redactio. Redact is a mid-19th-century word derived from the mid-18th-century English word redaction. At other times, it is simply in a party’s best interest to have redactions made to protect sensitive information or details. Sometimes it is legally necessary to make redactions. It is typically a common description in legal documents.

If I pause to erase a mistake and then continue writing the different position of the lead changes the sharpness and thickness of the line, this isn't a huge problem but it is a little bit frustrating. The heavy and super-stable bullets just drilled right into ballistic gel with no expansion or fragmentation, and very poor terminal effects. The hope was that if terminal performance expectations were kept low enough, the 220 grain-ish bullets might deliver. There was some hope though that it wasn’t so stable that it couldn’t tumble and perhaps break apart. 30-cal match bullets designed for magnum rifle velocities with correspondingly thick jackets, to fragment. However, that fast of a twist rate also caused the slow bullet to have poor terminal effects because it was so stable, that it wouldn’t yaw, tumble and break apart on impact. Accuracy became acceptable at subsonic velocity when the heavy bullets had the stabilization that the 1-7 inch twist provided. ![]() So, additional twist is needed to compensate for that.īy the time enough testing data came in on barrel twist rates, the Special Operations guys decided a 1-7 inch twist was necessary to stabilize the subsonic heavies the way they liked. The barrels also tend to be very short, to limit velocity to subsonic levels. Subsonic bullets from the 300 BLK are long and very heavy, so they require a very fast twist in the barrel. Hearing protection complicates communication between teammates. It has the added benefit of being hearing safe, even inside a small room, where anything supersonic would require hearing protection. Good terminal performance at subsonic velocity allows soldiers to shoot suppressed with almost no signature. The one problem that had everybody stumped was how to get a bullet to expand at subsonic velocity. SIG’s highly unusual 300 BLK V-Crown bullet features a polymer tip to initiate expansion, a two-stage ogive to aid feeding and reliable expansion at subsonic velocities. With its larger projectile and ability to function reliably at both supersonic and subsonic velocities, the 300 BLK appeared to be just what the doctor ordered. The shooting industry worked closely with the Special Operation community to produce it.
